The motivation behind Dynamic Ratings was to improve the back bone on which Dynasty was built.  There is a lot going on behind the scenes in this mode, but most of it wasn't exposed to the user in any way.  We wanted to give the hard core fan better access to the back end data and improve the actual foundation of the mode.  For this feature we set the following goals:

  • Improve the core of the foundation where necessary.
  • Expose this data to the user as easily as possible

In order to even tackle this amount of work we needed to have a clear priority from the start.  We started by evaluating which areas were in desperate need of attention or would be used heavily with the Recruiting feature (Playing Style, Playing Time, Championship Contender, Pro Potential) and separating the others that we wanted to tie into other new features at a later time (Stadium Atmosphere, Academic Prestige, etc). From there we once again created rough prototypes in excel that provided a starting point for the designs.

Knowing this was a monumental effort we started getting estimates early on, and had to be mindful of the cost from both an engineering and UI perspective.  After all, we had potentially fourteen screens to design.  In order to be as cost effective as possible we ultimately decided upon the UI you see above.   We wanted each screen to have familiar functionality, but also provide the right information that would provide players the data necessary to make informed decisions.

I think the end result was alright given the resource limitations, but I do wish we were able to implement the designs we had for some of the other Dynamic Ratings.
